Mount Tabor School is located in New Albany, Indiana and is part of the New Albany-Floyd County Consolidated School Corporation. Mount Tabor is the largest of nine elementary schools in the corporation. Indiana University Southeast, a commercial strip mall, an industrial park, middle-income homes, and four apartment complexes (two of which are subsidized housing) border Mount Tabor Elementary School’s twenty-two acre campus.

The original Mount Tabor School was built near the present site in 1928. Construction of the present building was begun in 1979. The new building opened in 1981 as a Kindergarten through Sixth Grade school with special accommodations for young adult special education students. The two-story building was designed to meet the needs of students with multiple handicaps and provide space for support staff. In 1991, the young adult students were moved to the high school and nine learning disability classes were returned to their respective home schools.

The 95,096 square foot building is divided into three color-coded pods. The classrooms have collapsible walls allowing for special activities to meet the needs of the students. The commons area between each pod is used for independent study and as an area for informal instructional activities. There is a sky-lighted gymnasium area with adaptive equipment for the physically disabled. A bright and clean cafeteria and a sidewalk café that overlooks the gymnasium provides students and their families with a quaint place to socialize and eat.

A large, spacious, open library is located in the middle pod of the building and there is a garden outside where children have the opportunity to garden or to enjoy the efforts of others. A snack shop and a bookstore staffed by the students are located on the first floor.

A large office area with six rooms is near the café and the entrance of the building. The principal, assistant principal, secretary, clerk, and health clerk have space here. Special rooms on the lower floor are for support staff such as occupational and physical therapists, speech therapists, and a therapist for the visually impaired. Many of the rooms, originally storage rooms, are now being used for classrooms, offices or for computer hardware.
